Notes: > Laura: “I really have no idea where the inspiration for this song came from. I didn’t experience this. I guess I just liked the story and noodled around with it.” > The strange strings were added by Laura humming into a little red box with a contact mic hooked through a chain of effects ending in an Electro Harmonix Synth9. This was challenging to do because the pedal had difficulty tracking the pitch, especially with a vibrato pedal in the chain. Ultimately, this is what made the sound so weird during the “I Want To Call You Baby” chorus section. > Rob: “We began by basing the arrangement on France Gall’s Ne dis pas aux copains, but abandoned this idea.” > The rhythm mixes African Rumba (Frida Sonko) and straight-ahead rock. > The drums are processed through the VSS-200 sampler, which softens the edges. > We borrowed a Brian Eno technique by recording the mic’d acoustic baritone ukulele with the speakers blaring. I learned about this technique thanks to a quote from Leo Abrahams in Geeta Dayal’s 33 ⅓ book about Brian Eno’s Another Green World. The mix of the room and direct signal was interesting. We became less clinical about recording. We used grubbier gear, cheaper mics and allowed noise in, especially if it was interesting. “Is it interesting?” is a far more useful artistic question than “Does it sound good?” > Geeta Dayal (from the same 33 ⅓ book) made a great point about “strapping a lot of old junk onto your signal chain,” which we have been doing since we started working on Build A Church With Debris. >

I Want To Call You Baby (L.Keith)
June 22nd, 2020 - July 11th, 2020
You call me up and ask if you can stay.
Just till Mercury’s out of retrograde.
You need a space to hide your face til the cosmos are back in place.
Well you know me, I’m always on. You’re always on my mind.
I wanna call you baby. Not once or twice, but daily.
I could tell you how I feel and it’d be fine.
But then again you might say, “Ha, get in line.”
You have a way of never letting any fan go astray.
Well you know me, I’m always on. You’re always on my mind.
I wanna call you baby. Not once or twice, but daily.
