On Being Away (R.Keith)

Recording Day One > August 13th, 2019
Final Mix > December 23rd, 2020
Selected Instruments > Aaron Bell’s Kay C-1 Bass, Martin O-15 Tenor Guitar, Alfaia, Triangle, Pandeiro, Makala Baritone Ukulele, u87 >

Notes: > Rob: “This song was written in Cefalú and Barcelona. I bumped the key up. This was, by far, the most difficult song for me to sing on the entire record. > Rob: “I had never played double upright bass before recording this song. I wanted to learn the upright bass because of Danny Thompson and Tony Reeves from Davy Graham and Pentangle records. I was able to borrow a 1957 Kay C-1 bass that had belonged to Aaron Bell, who played in Duke Ellington’s band in the late 1950s and early 1960s. > Rob: “I was trying to capture the vibe from Davy Graham’s Midnight Man LP. I took a songwriting class with Ray Davies in 2013. We chatted about Davy Graham privately. He said that virtually every famous guitarist from the 1960s attended Graham’s funeral.” > Scott Kettner plays forró percussion on this track. > A Makala baritone ukulele, which is considerably brighter than a Martin baritone, is the primary string rhythm instrument. >

On Being Away (R.Keith)
August 13th, 2019 - December 23rd, 2020

Don’t call me now,
I’m slowly moving sunlight on the bedroom wall
Don’t tear my playhouse down,
You’re working outside while I’m working in my mind
I go unfocused, but when I come back, I’m better for you
In this world, sometimes, all I want to do is run away
All I want to do is run away run away
It’s never because of you

Put out there away
Fold it into later
For an hour
I need some time with it before it leaves me
I go unfocused, but when I come back,
I’m better for you
in this world, sometimes, all I want to do is run away
All I want to do is run away run away
