Notes: > Rob: “This is one of the two oldest songs on Build A Church With Debris, written by myself and Craig Van Orsdale for a possible third Baskervilles album in 2009. I specifically remember having laughs with Craig about being romantic leads in a Science Fiction film. Also, ending two lines with the word ‘film’ is a lyrical faux pas. “We will make the girls cry” is a tribute to the Television Personalities and refers to crying in a British Invasion, teen heartthrob, swooning bobby sixers sense.” > Craig: “I believe Rob came up with Software as a world changer. Then, we evolved it into an adolescent duo dork fantasy about getting girls and being heroes in a world created by said duo.” > Rob: “ Laura and I took a while to concoct a method of harmonizing together. Our voices cover different ranges. We discovered that we could copy the lead vocal and make adjustments, usually in 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 7ths and 9ths, in Ableton Live to compose a close harmony. > The rhythm in the song is a baião, invented by Luiz Gonzaga. My main inspiration was an Aldair Soares song called A Volta Da Jangada. At this speed, it also reminds me of a cowboy ballad. > The psychedelic sound wash is a tribute to Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic workshop. > Additional sonic surprises were added from jam sessions. > The guitar solo was not on the original demo. As we were composing the new version, I started singing the guitar solo in my head and recorded it straight from my imagination. This does not usually happen. >

Software (R.Keith/C.Van Orsdale)
original demo August 13th, 2009. EOGS: November 6th, 2020 - December 13th, 2020

We know there’s a better life that we can make if we design it
You know, you’ve got nothing like me
Let’s go buy some software and see where it leads us
We can make a film starring both of us
We can be romantic leads in a science fiction film

We know there’s a better way we can make if we contemplate
and you’ll see just what I mean
Let’s go buy some software and see where it leads us
We can write some songs sung by both of us
We will make the girls cry and we will be there in the end

We need a change of pace
Something different and all wide open
You know it isn’t far away if we design something to see where it leaves us
Songs and film can paint the way for us
We’ll use zeroes and ones to design a world for us
