about

Trees Don’t Grow Under Playgrounds (R.Keith)

Recording Day One > August 16th, 2020
Final Mix > December 23rd, 2020
Selected Instruments > Egmond Typhoon Guitar & Bass, H&K Tubeman, EHX Black Finger, Casio SA-5, Zoom Sampletrak, Crudman, Altec 633a Salt Shake Rattle & Roll microphone

Notes: > Rob: “This is my third song about childhood, mostly focusing on adolescence and people in their early 20s.” > Rob: “This song was directly inspired by one of my favorite guitar players, Docteur Nico. Rhythmically and sonically, it owes a lot to African Fiesta. The rhythm combines elements of Brazilian baião and country picking with rumba. The percussion is understated because “the rhythm is in the guitars,” as the Beatles would say.” > The horn sound is a cheap Casio SA tuba. > The line “Trees Don’t Grow Under Playgrounds” was inspired by a poem from Brian Patten’s book Little Johnny’s Confession. > Playgrounds are sometimes multi-generational spaces if families stay in the same neighborhood or children visit grandparents with their children. > After the song was finished, it reminded me of R.E.M.’s Green LP. Peter Buck is still one of my favorite guitar players. R.E.M. were the first band I saw live on the Green tour. >

Trees Don’t Grow Under Playgrounds (R.Keith)
August 16th, 2020 - December 23rd, 2020

you crossleg knowledge box
you clued-in disturbance
wind can bring roofs down
trees don’t grow under playgrounds

you lasting memory
you light inside of it
forests become ships
trees don’t grow under playgrounds

all the pictures taped on your wall
creatures outside, they’ll just sleep on in the trees
the playground is empty
the playground is empty
trees don’t grow under playgrounds
